Carole Brazeau
Justice and Public
Security Coordinator

Carole is Algonquin and a member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. She is the Quebec Native Women’s Justice and Public Security coordinator since January 2008.

17+ years ago, she started providing front line services to First Nations women and children primarily at the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal.  Her formal studies include a Bachelor of Arts degree in women’s studies from Concordia University. As well, she pursued graduate studies at Carleton University in Ottawa with a focus on First Nations fishing rights.

Coordinator's Mandate

To support Native women’s rights and priorities regarding justice and public security and facilitate the transmission of information to the various parties involved in order to improve the living conditions of Native women and their families.

The main roles and responsibilities include:

COORDINATE:

  • Assist the president and/or the executive director of QNW in all dossiers related to justice and public security.
  • Coordinate and organize meetings, special events and projects concerning justice for Aboriginal women (including: workshops, advisory committees, ad hoc committees, and seminars).

ANALYSIS & RESEARCH

  • Coordinate QNW research and publications regarding justice and public security.
  • Identify recommendations intended to improve justice and public security for Aboriginal women.

PARTNERSHIPS

  • Maintain ongoing contact with representatives of government departments and agencies involved in justice and public security
  • Participate in government and non-governmental committees, conferences, advisory committees, annual general meetings, boards and special events involving justice and public security.

 


Native Legal Info Bulletins

Native legal info bulletins are radio spots broadcast over Native community stations in Quebec. These spots provide legal information and are available in French, English, Innu, Cree, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Mohawk, and Micmac.

The themes covered in phase I, II and III of the bulletins are:

  • Sexual harassment in the workplace
  • Child support
  • Paternity suit
  • Divorce
  • Conjugal violence
  • Sexual assault and complaint process
  • Sexual assault and compensation
  • Exploitation of elders
  • Peace Bonds
  • Subpoena
  • A Child's Testimony During a Criminal Trial
