It is with great pleasure that we announce the event, Gathering of Nations: Identity, Citizenship and Culture, to be held November 18th-19th 2011 at the Delta Hotel Montreal.

This Gathering of Nations will shed light on the issues linked to Aboriginal identity and citizenship in a solution-oriented reflection that will aim to reinforce First Nations’ citizenship and identity and First Nations participation in society. This Gathering of Nations is designed with the vision of healthy participation and real contribution of Aboriginal women and their families to promote the well-being and future of their communities in the Province of Quebec. This gathering is within a changing political and legislative context that witnessed, in the past year, Canada's adherence to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the adoption of Bill C-3 An Act to promote gender equity in Indian registration.“QNW believes that the important policy debate regarding identity and citizenship is currently deficient. Indeed, without a true reflection on First Nations citizenship, which should also reflect the reality of people living in urban areas, we risk continuing to maintain systems in our societies that promote historical discrimination based on sex.” notes Michèle Audette, Quebec Native Women’s President.

We therefore would like to count on your presence at this Gathering of Nations to send a clear message to the federal government on this important issue in the midst of the "exploratory process " put in place by the government until December 2011 to resolve outstanding issues that go beyond the scope of Bill C-3, a bill that once again dictates who is "Indian" in complete disregard of Aboriginal concepts of identity, belonging and citizenship.
